Infrared thermography is by far the most effective and efficient technology available today when it comes to locating and evaluating thermal anomalies on transmission & distribution lines and within substations. Because nearly all electrical components get hot before failure, Infrared inspections are a safe and cost-effective way for utilities to gauge the operating condition of assets and implement or compliment a predictive maintenance strategy. This technology has become an integral part of preventative maintenance programs throughout the electric utility industry.
Advantages of Infrared Inspection Program
Safety - Avoid catastrophic failure or injury
Greater asset reliability - Reduces unscheduled outages
Increased revenue - More uptime, revenue is maximized
Reduced outage costs Planned maintenance saves $
More efficient inspections Just looking for heat
Improved and less expensive maintenance
Reduced spare parts inventory - Fewer spares
Reduced operational costs
Performing Infrared inspections on transmission, distribution and substation equipment can increase reliability, reduce power outages, and potentially save power companies and municipalities hundred of thousands of dollars each year.

Building Envelope: Air leakage is the primary source of heating or cooling loss in a commercial building envelope. The primary complaint from employees in regards to heat is the discomfort caused by a cold draft and the primary complaint from employees in regards to cooling is the discomfort caused by cooled air escaping the building. Thermal imaging of the exterior walls and ceilings will often reveal inadequate insulation as well as air infiltration around doors, and windows on a building. Correcting heat loss or cooling problems will increase the comfort level of the occupants and decrease the energy cost to operate the building.
Block Walls: Concrete walls can be dangerous without proper grouting and rebar. This can reduce the structural reliability of the systems and can limit the effectiveness of the steel reinforcement. Grout locations are pre-engineered to be located at various intervals of the wall providing structural integrity. Structural grout often get missed during construction or the cavities are only partially filled. If these voids collect water it can lead to interior damage and corrosion of the reinforcement. Infrared scanning of block walls is an accurate, effective and non-destructive way to find grouted cells and insulation in a wall CMU wall.
Mechanical: Running mechanical equipment until "end-of-life" failure is a very expensive way to run a maintenance program. Equipment that is operating inefficiently will run “hot” causing other components to wear out prematurely. Improper lubrication, misalignments, and failing parts are just a few of the common problems that can be seen during an infrared scan of mechanical equipment. Properly scheduled thermal inspections, as part of a predictive maintenance program, can provide early detection of problems and avoid costly unscheduled shutdowns.
Electrical: Recommended by the National Fire Protection Association and the InterNational Electrical Testing Association:
"Routine infrared inspections of energized electrical systems should be performed annually prior to shutdown. More frequent infrared inspections, for example, quarterly or semiannually, should be performed where warranted by loss experience, installation of new electrical equipment, or changes in environmental, operational, or load conditions."
"...From a return on investment perspective, infrared inspection programs have proven that on average for every $1 spent on infrared electrical inspections, there is a $5 return on investment for materials and labor from fixing the problems before it fails..."

Before an electrical component burns up, it heats up. Thermography is the only technology used that can see the excess heat (resistance) so that problems can be found and Maintenance personnel can act to correct the problem before a catastrophic failure.
Infrared thermography is used to perform P/PM inspections on electrical equipment because excess resistance on electrical equipment indicates electrical faults such as loose connections, overloaded or imbalanced circuits, faulty breakers, damaged switches, faulty fuses and a wide range of other unwanted electrical conditions.
Avoid costly unscheduled shutdowns, maximize the efforts of your maintenance personnel, and increase your workplace safety by scheduling a routine infrared survey today.
Energy Efficiency: Missing or insufficient insulation is no doubt the most common problem in residential homes today. especially if it has been blown into hollow spaces that you can’t see. Insulation that is incorrectly installed or blown-in insulation that is not packed sufficiently will settle and produce voids in a wall. In new homes and additions, difficult insulation details can often get overlooked by a building inspector. Sub-contractors often remove insulation after an inspection to access something that got missed, and fail to replace it before it gets closed in.
Moisture Intrusion: An infrared inspection of your home for moisture problems is the best non-destructive means to quickly locate your problem areas of moisture and all of the surrounding affected areas. Moisture promotes mold growth and mold has forced people to abandon homes, offices and schools. An infrared inspection should be included as part of a pre-purchase inspection when buying a home.
Residential Electrical: Infrared Inspections of electrical equipment within the home identifies excess heat that is caused by electrical issues such as loose connections, faulty fuses, defective breakers, damaged switches, overloaded or imbalanced circuits and a myriad of other problematic electrical conditions.
According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA):
Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in an estimated 37,900 home structure fires reported to U.S. fire departments in 2014. These fires caused:
Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 11% of reported home fires, one of every five (20%) home fire deaths, 11% of home fire injuries, and one-fifth (21%) of the direct property damage from home fires.
Your home should be regularly inspected to catch and prevent problems that potentially cause fires, lead to loss of life and cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage.
Roof Scan: "An infrared roof scan is a systematic thermal inspection of a roofing system with the specific intent to locate any thermal anomalies and determine if they require repair. These thermal anomalies may or may not be moisture related"
Locating the exact point of moisture intrusion into a commercial roof system can be an extremely overwhelming and frustrating task. By using infrared thermography, we find the trapped moisture below the roof membrane and mark the wet areas so that repairs can be made surgically. This can save you money because you may not have to replace the roof as soon. By marking paint directly on the roof, repair areas can be seen by anyone standing on the roofs after the survey is performed. Incorporating roof scans as part of the "pre-purchase" or "building-commissioning" process can potentially save you thousands.
How an infrared roof inspection works:
When looking for moisture, infrared roof inspections are performed in the early evening and during the night. This allows us to take advantage of a physical property called thermal capacitance. Thermal capacitance is the physical property of a material’s ability to store heat. The materials in roof assemblies have a relatively low thermal capacitance, especially when compared to water. Water requires a lot of energy to raise its temperature and likewise must release a lot of energy to cool. Therefore, as the roof radiates energy back to the night sky, the dry areas of the roof will cool faster and the wet areas will cool slower thereby creating the thermal contrast we need to locate anomalies that require further investigation.
The Village of Wellington, FL is a world-famous equestrian community and destination boasting beautiful year-round weather and is home to the largest horse show in the world, The Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). There are few other equestrian communities more dedicated or tailored to the avid equestrian.
Before Thermography, veterinarians could only locate a problem with observation or palpatation. But with scientifically proven equine thermography, an abnormality – now called thermographic or infrared abnormality – can show tissue that’s stressed before the affected tissue becomes damaged providing huge benefits to veterinarians.
Conditions that infrared thermal imaging can help assess
Whether you are buying, selling or just looking for a routine infrared scan of your horse, Look Thermography Corp can prove invaluable to your finances and the horse's health.
